Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay instantly became enthralled with an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to engage people. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful from her mother. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there was later the inspiration to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college when she became fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
